Rivers in the Desert

2023-02-12T10:19:45-05:00

Do you ever just feel defeated and discouraged? Life has a way of throwing us a great deal of disappointments and it's rather easy to become disheartened by it all. In the news we've heard a great deal of discouraging events. From ongoing police brutality to mass shootings to hateful and harmful legislation to local violence and so much more. There's a lot of heavy news coming our way. With all of it out there, it can be really easy to

Out with the Old in with the New….

2023-02-12T10:15:29-05:00

I have a hard time cleaning out my closet. Maybe some reading can relate. I want to keep everything. I just know that a sweater that does not fit anymore will come back in style and miraculously fit if I just keep the sweater five more years. Some friends have told me about a helpful practice that assists in regulating closet space. The practice is simple, if you buy something new, then you have to get rid of something old. I

Through and Through

2023-02-12T10:14:23-05:00

What are you going through in your life? Although we have begun a new year, matters of life haven't necessarily changed for everyone. Maybe you're going through a health diagnosis, enduring a financial hardship, navigating new circumstances in life, mending a relationship, seeking healing internally or externally, or something else. The truth is we are all going THROUGH something. This past week, we began a new sermon series called "Something New" exploring stories in scripture where communities were going through a period of

I don’t want to!

2023-02-12T10:13:16-05:00

Maybe you have heard this proclamation from a young child in your life......and maybe also from an adult. LOL! Maybe you are the one who has said this most recently in your life! There are many things in life that we do not want to do! A friend of mine growing up said that his dad told him, "you don't have to do anything you do not want to do." This is true. Each of us have been created with the ability

Traditioned Innovation!

2023-01-10T23:50:24-05:00

One thing that has impacted how I approach ministry from my time at Duke is the phrase “Traditioned Innovation,” coined by then Dean of the Divinity School Gregory Jones and theologian Andrew Hogue. In their book Navigating the Future, they define traditioned innovation as “a way of thinking and living that holds the past and future together in creative tension.” For many Hispanics, tomorrow, January 6th, has a special meaning that binds us to the generational tradition of celebrating “Three Kings Day”

Love Will Make a Way!

2022-12-19T09:56:46-05:00

Have you ever heard this before? Whether we are talking about romantic relationships, familial relationships, collegial relationships, or general friendship, I believe love is what carries people through the difficult seasons. No matter what you may be going through, the love we share with the people beside us is our stabling force. But what happens when that love fades or those relationships become frayed? Believe it or not, love still holds us. However, it is not our love that I am speaking of, rather

Joy to the World!

2022-12-19T09:55:19-05:00

If you're anything like me, you've been running around singing Christmas songs ever since Thanksgiving (or maybe even before)! There is just something different about this season that rings differently. Maybe it's the music, maybe it's the weather, maybe it's the holiday parties, maybe it's the presents. Whatever it is, it seems to bring a little joy to our hearts. This week, our theme in worship is Joy. And yet, as I think about what brings me joy in this season, all of

Nothing is Impossible!

2022-12-19T09:54:32-05:00

Do you like being surprised? Some people like being surprised while others would rather anticipate most things that happen around them. Sometimes people talk about the birth of a baby as a surprise. People will say, "she was a surprise" or "he was a surprise." As we continue into the advent story we all realize in so many ways that Jesus- Jesus- Jesus himself was a "surprise." The birth of Jesus was not planned by Mary and Joseph. The surprise

Speaking Gratitude!

2022-12-19T09:53:37-05:00

What are you grateful for this year? So much has happened over the last couple of years that has simply worn us down. As I have navigated my own faith, one thing I've found to be helpful is speaking gratitude. Gratitude is a word thrown around a lot in our culture, but it's important to not let it lose its meaning. When I talk about speaking gratitude, I'm not talking about posting on social media about how great life is. Rather, I am

In the End is the Beginning

2022-12-19T09:52:20-05:00

Who is exhausted from reading the Bible? If you have been following along with our sermon series or daily devotionals you will know that this week we are finally at the last book of the Bible, Revelation! We are officially done with reading the Bible….. Just kidding. Although we end now with Revelation we know that this book is really not about “the end” but rather a new beginning. Throughout the book the author cast a vision for a new
