Maybe you have heard this proclamation from a young child in your life……and maybe also from an adult. LOL! Maybe you are the one who has said this most recently in your life!

There are many things in life that we do not want to do! A friend of mine growing up said that his dad told him, “you don’t have to do anything you do not want to do.” This is true. Each of us have been created with the ability to say “yes” and to say, “no.” We can choose to not do something.

Yet, when we do not do some things that we have been invited to do or could do or have to do, there is a possibility that we will miss out. This week we start a new sermon series called, “Something New.” We are looking through scripture at stories where God is doing something new. This week we start with the book of Jonah.

In the story of Jonah, God called Jonah to go to Ninevah and Jonah said to God, “I don’t want to.” Many of us know the story beyond that. Jonah ended up in the belly of a whale and eventually went where God asked him to go. The story ends with the people of Ninevah turning their lives over to God and recognizing God as their God. If Jonah did not go this would not have happened.

Although we may not want to do something at times, the story of Jonah teaches us that when we do not show up we may miss out on what God is doing. Today, I wonder what God may be calling you to do? Today I wonder what might await you if you say yes. Maybe God has something new awaiting you. Maybe God has something new awaiting someone you care for!

Today say, “yes” to God and know that when you do, a small piece of heaven is found on earth!

See you on Sunday!
